The Omnivore's Dilemma: Interesting Facts

As you all know, we are reading The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan.  Instead of making you read the whole book here are some interestive facts that I've learned so far:
  • Because of the obesity epidemic, our generation will be the first generation to have a life expectancy shorter than that of our parents
  • 1500 miles.  That is the distance the average food item travels before it ends up on your plate.
  • Ten calories of fossil fuel are used to deliver one calorie of food to your plate
  • For the first time in history, the people suffering from overnutrition (one billion) eclipses the number of people suffering from undernutrition (800 million)

  1. It's so embarrassing to think that we aren't improving our lives. Now watch Jacob Hambrick's conspiracy theory videos posted on his site, and you'll really have food for thought (though not much for consumption!).
